SOMATIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

Somatic Psychotherapy (or Body Psychotherapy) focuses on the integral connection between our physical body, our emotions, and our mind as interrelated components of ourselves and our functioning. Viewing the human nervous system as a continuous, unified intelligence and perception distributed throughout our entire body, somatic psychotherapy utilizes a range of body-centered approaches to address clients’ presenting concerns. Somatically-informed psychotherapists might facilitate movement exercises, mindfulness training, breathing techniques, postural shifts, relaxation protocols, and body-based self-compassion practices to support clients in more effectively coping with life stressors and reducing symptoms. All Small Steps clinicians integrate somatic approaches to treatment, including polyvagal theory, body awareness, and self-regulation through mindfulness.
